NEW PALTZ GREEN PARTY PRIORITIES AND GOALS 2009
- Working for Town/Village unification, per the following process discussed at the caucus: first unifying the the ENCCs, the Building Depts., and Planning Boards, then moving forward as a study recommends.
- Student recruitment
- Being involved in the town and village Comprehensive Plan process
- Presenting GP positions on issues (i.e., traffic) to government
- Buying a table
- Continued campaigning and endorsing of candidates
- Inviting speakers to discuss issues they are involved in we could support/work on
- Increasing ridership on Loop bus
- Animal rights projects:
- Geese being killed at SUNY?
- Meat in schoolsmeat-free Mondays?
- Dissection in schoolspromoting alternatives
- Humane educationpassing a resolution for it in schools
- Support for passing of wetlands law
- Ensuring accountability in government
Priorities for the Village of New Paltz:
- Election reform.
- Unification.
- Public access television.
- Increased accountability of SUNY: SUNY not giving back to the community and town and village rolling over when SUNY wants something. Relationship is not two way street.
- Improving Town/Village relationship.
- Open government--more communication between the departments and with the public, televised Planning Board meetings, more effort on public awareness of the issues and recruitment of people to the committees.
- Environmental protection--enforcement of the FEIS for developers with the EnCC allowed access to the property, prioritizing of the preservation of the Millbrook Preserve, and the passing of legislation and code changes to protect wetlands and steep slopes
- Traffic and taxes are unequivocally the two top issues in the police dept. poll of the town (which included the village)
- High taxes: result of sprawl and lack of village and town administrators looking for grants that could pay for things that we currently use taxes to pay for.
Priorities for the Town Comprehensive Plan update:
- Minimizing greenhouse gas emissions
- Preserving agricultural land
- Wetlands protection
- Preservation open space west of the Wallkill river (by selling development rights to a greater density area and/or by the Town buying a conservation easement)
- Prioritizing local food, farms, and farmers
- Encouraging small businesses
- Encouraging local manufacturing/artisinal industry/hands-on jobs
- Affordable housing
- More efficient and eco-friendly transportation options
